Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other (Studies in Jungian Psychology by Jungian Analysis, 79)
Published in Paperback by Inner City Books (September, 1998)
Author: James Hollis
Average review score:

Awesome Book - Very Revealing!
I can't say enough good things about this book. At 29 years old and fairly new to the dating scene, I didn't realize how much the history of my life was projected onto the person I'm dating. This book helped me to step back and see how I approach relationships. I now at least know what I need to work on and what I should expect from myself and others. It helped me to understand myself. The book is written in a gender-neutral manner. It's common sense (now that I've read the book) applies to both sexes, regardless of sexual orientation. I've even recommended it to married friends that are perfectly happy. Thank you!

Hollis wonderfully describes our search for the perfect love
This book helps to understand what goes on in the human condition and that magical state called "in love" when we experience the beloved. It is a wonderful exposition of the jungian phychological view of our deepest emotions; how they occur, what is their nature, how they lead us into pain, and the path of self discovery. The myth that a "magical other" will give us comfort from this world, love us eternally, satisfy our deepest yearnings is dissected and forcefully exposed. In it's place Hollis gives us the freedom of self sustenance, the discovery of solitude and hope for conscious mature relationships that are based on companionship, trust, vulnerability, understanding and our sexuality.

Fast Track Visual Basic .NET
Published in Paperback by Wrox Press Inc (May, 2002)
Authors: Rocky Lhotka and Billy Hollis
Average review score:

No fluff. Just solid gold nuggets.
I'm switching from VB6 to VB.NET, so I bought 10 books. This one is hands down the best. Some "authors" just paraphrase Microsoft's weak documentation, others present their 600 line MyButterflyCollection objects just to explain how to set fonts programmatically. Not these guys. They actually did original thinking and material organization and figured out how to feed the reader a lean, fighting diet of golden informational nuggets. The book is so concise and simple, you can read it without even sitting at a computer. My hat's off.

A great introduction into the real world of VB.NET
Fast Track Visual Basic.NET is an excellent follow-up book to the successful Public Beta version. I constantly use this book in the first instance, rather than the larger Professional Desktop books - because it provides me with concise & pragmatic explanations of the key technical issues in a manner that is intuitive.

Back in early 2001, when Visual Studio.NET public beta was released I rushed out and bought a copy of VB.NET Programming With the Public Beta & C# Programming With the Public Beta. Recently I had the pleasure of working as a technical reviewer on both of the sequels: I am a time-poor developer and architect and rely on ensuring that I have access to quality information and value greatly a concise real-world professional explanation.

Generally, as busy developers, we do not have the time to read a book from cover to cover but I found that the Fast Track book is actually well-suited for this because it is so well written and full of interesting issues; although it is also great to use simply as a reference book. But what really sells me on this book is its professional and friendly atmosphere; the craftsmanship of the authors; choice of content and clarity of explanation.

A risk facing many VB.NET developers is that they will not comprehensively understand full Object Orientated programming nor the broader functionality of .NET; having been nurtured on legacy VB's. A C++ or Java developer moving to C# will have an enormous advantage over a legacy VB developer; however this book provides an excellent chapter that simply and clearly articulates the new object-orientated capabilities of our language in a manner that quickly offers the opportunity to bridge the gap.

Apart from the expected syntax and ADO.NET chapters there is excellent discussion of creating a Windows Service, Installation & Deployment and the big issue of Interoperability and Migration (invoking COM and calling Windows API's and using the migration wizard).

The book is full of explanations that simplify complex issues, that are well supported by short, realistic & pragmatic examples and offers a comprehensive understanding of our new & very powerful development paradigm.

follow the arrow
insightful, full of samples (about 800 though largely black & white) a great guide to graphic styles, and the key movers & shakers in the history of graphic design right through from the 1890s to the 1990s.

a huge resource for such a little book, definately worth reading if not just to look at the pictures...

Great reference for Graphic Design history.
This is an excellent guide to the history of graphic design. I really enjoyed reading
this insightful view of graphic design. It has lots of useful information on the history
of graphic design from early posters to the electronic age. I have found this as a good
book for my study as an art student. I would recomend this to anyone interested in

I incorporate much of the extensive information and exercises this book provides into my postnatal fitness classes and workshops. "How To Raise Children Without Breaking Your Back" is the most comprehensive, user friendly source of information developed to help new moms have a shorter and more complete postpartum recovery.

The Philosophy of Social Science : An Introduction
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (September, 1994)
Author: Martin Hollis
Average review score:

The Ontology & Epistemology Behind the Methods
Hollis's book provides a sorely needed corrective to the common but unfortunate assumption that "method" is distinct from "theory". Through a series of examples, allegories, and histories, the author illustrates the differences in ontology (ways of being) and epistemology (ways of knowing) that inform how research is done in the social sciences. Hollis's prose succeeds in bridging the gap between the abstract and the concrete better than many expositions on the philosophy of social science. I enjoy assigning it to my research methods students to remind them of the philosophy that motivates the quantitative and qualitative methods they are studying.

comprehensive introduction to social sciences
Great stuff for researchers, be they young or somewhat older. The book reveals the underlying rationale of a lot of confusion that is going around in the social sciences. By outlining the history of social sciences and concurrently looking at the basic assumptions of subsequent conflicting scientific views, Hollis enhances the cohesion and credibility of the field of social sciences. Though not easy to consume, this is an exciting book for all the investigative out there who pretend to be able to talk with authority about the philosophy of social sciences...

Professional Visual Basic Interoperability - COM and VB6 to .NET
Published in Paperback by Wrox Press Inc (February, 2002)
Authors: Billy Hollis and Rockford Lhotka
Average review score:

Practical advise and excellent working samples
I have been pouring through a lot of books on .Net and when I first pulled this book out of the box I thought there may not be much to it because it didn't appear too thick. I couldn't have been more mistaken.
First, the print is smaller than most Wrox books I've seen. Second, this book packs in a lot of practical, heavy technical advice and samples in communication from .Net to COM, COM to .Net, Custom Marshaling and much more. Its well worth the money you'll spend and sure to become a heavily used technical resource.

A Great Technical Bridge
Its only a couple of months after the retail release of Visual Studio .Net and we are still coming to terms with the new reality - and it will take months and not weeks to feel cool about it! Once you start to feel comfortable with VB.Net the language - I am still a bit shell-shocked - then you have to start thinking about migration and legacy. This is when all the smiles drop! From a time and cost perspective we know that this is where we have to get it right.

What is great about this book is that its written by highly skilled and seasoned fellow programmers - these guys know their stuff - they know the issues - they know the reality, and they focus just on interop! Make no mistake interop is not a cake-walk and we need a technical bridge. The discussion on API calls, COM & Marshalling and DCOM-Remoting-Web Services were terrific.

And said to Miss Muffet, "Howdy!"

This book is so cute. It has 15 traditional Mother Goose Rhymes that have been changed around like only an Aggie could. It has become my all time favorite baby shower or birthday gift for pregnant Aggies, newborn Aggies, and Aggies havin' birthdays.

Older kids enjoy hearing the rhymes and learning the traditions. There is also a game on ea. page...find the Sr. Class ring.

The Ancient Egyptian Tale of Two Brothers: The Oldest Fairy Tale in the World (Oklahoma Series in Classical Culture, Vol 7)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Txt) (November, 1990)
Author: Susan Tower Hollis
Average review score:

fascinating presentation of the oldest Egyptian tale
The meaning of this tale has been debated for centuries. It follows the rites of passage of a young shepherd boy who rejects the overtures of an older woman and who later becomes king, along with the trials and tribulations thereof. Apart from examining this tale, the author also constructs a theoretical model for the study of other ancient narratives. The author provides an interesting concept of explaining the 'oldest fairy tale in the world'. The background history of the tale is provided, then followed by the author's extensive explanation of the story. It has an excellent bibliography; recommended for those with an interest in Egyptian literature.
